T oday, I had the opportunity to compete in the Welwyn Fun Run held at Panshanger Park. It’s an event I had been eagerly anticipating, knowing it would be a great chance to challenge myself and see how I could perform against other runners. The course was a 2K stretch, set amidst the scenic yet demanding landscape of Panshanger Park, featuring a notably steep incline that posed a real test. I knew from the start that the climb would be a crucial part of the race, and I mentally prepared myself to tackle it with everything I had.
As the race began, I felt a surge of excitement and determination, pushing off the start line with my usual focus on securing that first place. I’ve always aimed to finish in the top spot and push my limits as much as possible. The initial sections of the course were manageable, and I maintained a strong pace, working hard to stay in the lead or at least close to it. However, the incline soon presented itself, and it became clear that this race was going to be an uphill battle—literally and figuratively.
Despite my best efforts, there was one runner who stayed firmly ahead of me. He was older, taller, and undoubtedly more experienced, which gave him an advantage, especially on the steeper parts of the course. Competing in an Under 14 race at just 8 years old is tough, and I was aware going into it that I’d be up against bigger and stronger runners. Nevertheless, I didn’t let that discourage me. I kept pushing as hard as I could, trying to find an opportunity to close the gap between us.
In the end, despite my relentless efforts, I couldn’t overtake him. I crossed the finish line in second place, clocking in at 07:49 for a distance of 1.98km, with a pace of 3:56 per kilometre. While this was a respectable speed, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I could have done more or pushed myself harder at certain points. I always strive to be better, and today’s race has given me a lot to reflect on and work towards. Missing out on first place and the trophy left me feeling a bit disappointed, but I know it’s all part of the journey.
Even though I didn’t come away with the win, the experience has motivated me even more for next year. I’m already thinking about how I can improve and what changes I need to make to my training. Tackling that steep incline with more confidence and power is going to be a key focus for me. It’s important to turn these challenges into learning experiences, and that’s exactly what I plan to do.
Looking ahead, I’m determined to come back stronger and more prepared for the next Welwyn Fun Run. I know the course now, I’ve experienced the competition, and I’m ready to put in the hard work to reach my goal. Winning isn’t just about crossing the finish line first; it’s about learning from each race, growing as a runner, and constantly pushing myself to be the best I can be. Next year, I’m aiming to secure that first-place finish and finally earn the trophy I’ve been dreaming of.
