Today, I was really excited to be running in the St Martin's School Relay with my school team. This was the first time we had entered a relay competition, and I was looking forward to seeing how it would work. Unlike normal races where I run alone, this event needed us to work as a team to win. It felt different, but I was ready for the challenge.
Our school entered eight boys, and we were split into two teams of four. Each runner had to complete 1.7km before tagging the next person to run. The idea was simple: the first runner starts, then tags the second runner, who tags the third, and finally, the fourth runner finishes the race. Our team discussed our running order, making sure we put each person in the best position to help us win.
The race started, and our first runner got us into the lead. He ran brilliantly, giving our team a great start. Our second runner extended the lead, making sure we stayed ahead. Then, our third runner also ran really well, keeping our position strong. Finally, it was my turn. As the last runner, I knew my job was to hold onto our lead and finish the race strong. I pushed as hard as I could and managed to increase our lead even more, making sure that we won the race!
The course itself was quite challenging because we had to wear trainers instead of spikes. The route started on grass, then moved onto tarmac, and finally onto a road. Running on three different surfaces made it tricky, especially since I’m used to wearing spikes for races. On the muddy sections, my trainers were slippery, which made it harder to run fast. But I kept going and focused on finishing strong for my team.
I was incredibly proud of our team because we completed the race in 7 minutes and 7 seconds. That was an amazing time, and we beat the second-place team by well over a minute or two! It was a huge achievement for us, and I was so happy when we all received a team trophy. It felt great to win something together as a team, and I knew that all our hard work had paid off.
This was a really exciting and interesting event because I had never run in a relay race for my school before. It wasn’t just about how fast I could run—it was about all four of us working together to bring back a win. I definitely want to come back next year and race again. Hopefully, we can be victorious once more and keep our title as champions!
